[tex](k-4)(k+4)=0[/tex]

use:
[tex]a^2-b^2=(a-b)(a+b)[/tex]

[tex]k^2-4^2=0\\\\k^2-16=0\ \ \ \ |+16\\\\k^2=16\to k=\pm\sqrt{16}\\\\\boxed{k=-4\ \vee\ k=4}[/tex]

Other method:

[tex](k-4)(k+4)=0\iff k-4=0\ \vee\ k+4=0\\\\\boxed{k=4\ \vee\ k=-4}[/tex]
