Because alcohol dilates blood vessels, a person who goes outside in cold weather after drinking risks Hypothermia. This is a medical emergency that occurs when the  body loses heat than it can produce heat, leading to dangerously low body temperature. When there is an imbalance between heat production and heat loss such that heat loss is high and prolonged then hypothermia may occur. It may also happen accidentally after cold exposure without enough warm, dry clothing for protection.
