x= number of nickels
3x= number of dimes

Each nickel is $0.05 and each dime is $0.10. Multiply each coins monetary value by the quantity of each. Add them equal to the total $9.10.

(0.05 * x) + (0.10 * 3x)= 9.10
multiply inside parentheses

0.05x + 0.3x= 9.10
add

0.35x= 9.10
divide both sides by 0.35x

x= 26 nickels

DIMES
3x= 3(26)= 78 dimes

CHECK:
(26 nickels * 0.05) + (78 dimes * 0.10)= 9.10
$1.30 + $7.80= $9.10
$9.10= $9.10

ANSWER: There are 26 nickels and 78 dimes.

Hope this helps! :)
