The instructor should say that cell-mediated immunity means that the body is trying to defend itself against intracellular microbes that invated by engulfing and destroying the microbe.

Cell-mediated immunity involves the activation of phagocytes which defends against intracellular microbes such as bacteria or viruses. These mediation starts with the activation of T lymphocytes which will activate phagocytes to destroy these microbes.
