If the average price of four pairs of shoes is $50, and three of those pairs of shoes are priced at $35, $40 and $55, what is the price of the fourth pair of shoes?

An average can be calculated by the quotient of the sum of all terms and the number of terms. In this instance, there are 4 pairs of shoes with three given values. Let's say x is the price of the fourth pair of shoes.

[tex] \frac{35+40+55+x}{4} =50 [/tex]

Clear the fraction by multiplying both sides of the equation by 4.
