In the nineteenth century, the Thirteen Colonies annexed Florida, ceded to the U.S. by Spain, purchased the Louisiana (currently, all the states west of the Mississippi River) from France, the annexation of Texas and the purchase of New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and California after the Mexican-American War, the annexation of Hawaii and the purchase of Alaska from Russia.
