Homologous chromosomes are not exact copies of each other. They are distinct chromosomes passed down through the gametes of each parent. ... During cell division each homologous chromosome will duplicate to form a pair of sister chromatids. In mitosis the sister chromatids then separate to form daughter diploid cells.
