9 = 6y + 33
9 - 33 = 6y
6y = 9 - 33
y = [tex] \frac{ - 24}{6} = - 4[/tex]
y = -4

To solve you need to get y by itself:

9 = 6y + 33

-33       - 33

Which then equals:

-24 = 6y

Then to solve for y you need to do this:

-24 = 6y

/6      /6

And you get:

y = -4
