How did the policies of segregation become entrenched in the south?

Answer:

the south had the most slavery when it was legal because it was mostly agricultural and they needed the most help. after slavery become illegal the southeners were the most bitter about it and had the most prejudices against African Americans making it much more welcome to segregation. most of the people in the south still felt like African Americans were lesser than white people.
