Colonial and post-indepence America until the second half of the 19th century was an agrarian society. It´s estimated that in the 1790s, 90 percent of the American population lived in the countryside. They were mainly farmers. If they needed an item they couldn´t produce, they usually imported it from Britain or from other European countries.
