Answer:

Sometimes, before the cell divides, a mistake made in the DNA is copied to make a new set of chromosomes. This is called mutation. If a mutation occurs during the formation of sex cell, an offspring that results from that sex cell will be affected by the mutation. Even though some mutations don't make a difference and some are even helpful, many mutations are harmful because they can change the instruction of the gene.
