The primary driver of earthquakes in Japan is its location on the tectonically active Ring of Fire, where many earthquakes occur. The fact that Japan is an island nation with much coastline also makes it vulnerable to tsunamis. In addition, much of Japan’s population lives close to the coast because of the country’s mountainous interior.
