There are several reasons why different groups wanted to settle the new world:
Early Spanish Conquistadors simply wanted to explore new lands and get rich.
Puritan Separatists from England wanted to escape religious persecution and form colonies under strict religious and relatively egalitarian principles.
Many poor Scots-Irish farmers emigrated in order to find more suitable land than what was available in cold and wet Ulster.
