One third of the bagels in a bakery are sesame bagels. There are 72 sesame bagels. Define a variable. Then write and solve an equation to find how many bagels there were in the bakery.

Variable b = total number of bagels in the shop. Equation: 1/3b = 72. Multiply both sides by 3 to get b = 72x3. b = 216.
