An unreliable narrator is, as the name suggests, unreliable. They withhold information and draw the reader in. Suspense levels rise, and the audience has no choice really but to get engaged once their curiosity is piqued. They have to piece the clues together themselves because the narrator isn't going to do it. It tests their attention and intelligence, especially when something within the plot contradicts what the narrator has stated.
