How did mercantilism affect the growth of colonies in the Americas?

 america and britain initially had a good mutualistic relationship.. however, as america became more able to support itself independently, they desired to be separated from Britain. america basically though it was too good for britain now and didn't need her anymore (much like a child and a mother: mother supports child, child gets more and more independent, finally wants total independence and move away from mom, even though wouldn't be anywhere w/o her.)
