Dickens employs the Ghost of Christmas Past to demonstrate to Scrooge how repulsive his behavior has been. Scrooge was filled with penitence and anguish as he heard his own words recounted by the Spirit. When the Ghost turns Scrooge's own words against him, he feels humiliated.
