Geostationary satellites are placed in orbit above the equator at an orbital altitude of  35786 km in order to perfectly match the earth's rotation...thus they APPEAR stationary in the sky ..... then your DISH TV antenna (etc)  can point in one direction at them for continuous communication.    Or.... a spy or weather  satellite would be able to look at one section of the earth non-stop
