Let's convert both fractions into like denominators, so 6 1/3 becomes 6 2/6, 4 1/2 becomes 4 3/6. Subtract them, 6 2/6 becomes 5 8/6 - 4 3/6, which is 1 5/6.

Joby's plant was 1 [tex] \frac{5}{6} [/tex] inches taller than Pat's plant.

Let's break it down--

Common denominator's first:

2: 2, 4, 6.
3: 3, 6

3/6 and 2/6.   Ok, so 6 2/6 and 4 3/6.

Now, you subtract those two.

6 2/6 - 4 3/6.
That will equal 1 5/6.
So, your answer would be 1 5/6.

Glad i could help, and good luck!
