The British gained control of New Zealand in 1840. They made a treaty promising the Maori possession of their "lands and estates, forests, fisheries, and other properties." There were over 100 signatures by Maori chiefs shortly after. In 1844, there was a rebellion by the Maori started by Hone Heke.
