A compression wave is transmitted by motion or particles. Sound is a compression wave that travels through gases, liquids and solids by moving atoms/molecules/particles which in turn bump into neighbouring atoms/molecules/particles.

In a vacuum there are no atoms, molecules or particles present to transmit the wave.
