5x + 8y = 29, when x = 17

Plug in 17 for x.

5(17) + 8y = 29

Simplify.

85 + 8y = 29

Subtract 85 from both sides.

8y = 29 - 85

Simplify.

8y = -56

Divide both sides by 8.

y = -7
