At the end of "The Chrysanthemums," Elisa realizes that the man was not interested in her chrysantemums at all. She sees the sprouts by the side of the road, and realizes that the man had lied to her because he wanted to get some business from her. Also, she realizes now that what was her great escape is now in fact another situation in which she is trapped and misunderstood.
