The reaction may be referred to as a decarboxylation reaction. Decarboxylation reactions are those in which carbon dioxide is removed. This reaction in which pyruvic acid is connverted to acetyl coenzyme A is a part of the reactions that take place during the process of respiration. The carbon dioxide released during respiration is produced from such decarboxylation reactions.
