The Triple Entente had three members (hence the "Triple"): the Russian Empire, the French Republic and The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (today's UK+Ireland).
This alliance of countries wanted to counterbalance another alliance: that of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy (called Triple Alliance).
