"Square inches" means area, so 60" wide and 3 feet long is multiplied, however, they have to be in the same unit. So, 3 feet = 36 inches since 1 foot is 12 inches and 3(12) = 36. 

Therefore, 60 inches * 36 inches = 2,160 square inches of fabric.
