The defining ideals could be community and individualism which are often at loggerheads. For example, the community in the past has not included black Americans who have been excluded from the white community and ostracized or lynched if they try to become a part of the general community. Individualism can be the 'rugged individualism' of unfettered pursuit of one's own goals and this can be in conflict with community goals.
