A base is a substance that produces hydroxide ions in solutions.
A base that produces hydroxide ions in aqueous solution is also known as:  Arrhenius bases 

Some of the bases that produce hydroxide ions in solutions are sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and potassium hydroxide (KOH).
