ex: l -3 l = 3.

the two vertical lines on either side stand for absolute value, or the distance to 0 from the given number.
THE ANSWER WILL ALWAYS BE POSITIVE (except...)

however, if there is a negative sign on the OUTSIDE of the bars, the answer will be NEGATIVE.

ex: - l -4 l = -4
ex: l -4 l = 4
