Why was the constitution written to be vague and act as a guiding principle of government?

The Constitution may have been left unclear so that it can develop with the times. Many of today's difficulties could not have been projected by our forefathers. Some of the vagueness is because of lapse, though some of it was left that way purposely for unexpected circumstances.
