Why was Alexander the great was so successful as a general and ruler?

Alexander led from the front and never asked any of his soldiers to do something that he himself wouldn't do. Alexander inspired his soldiers to overcome incredible odds, facing armies vastly larger, marching into the unknown discovering the world was much larger than the Greeks had thought.
