According to the parados, the ancient Greeks believed that the gods punished boastful people. Pride is one of seven deadly sins, so it is obvious that it is something you may be punished for. If you are way too proud, and boast about your successes too much, you are likely to be punished, according to the ancient Greek beliefs. There is no reason to punish a joyful and humble person, and if you fear and revere gods, that is always a good thing.
