How did Americans feel about expanding westward?

Some Americans felt like expanding westward was their right and that it was their responsibility (Manifest Destiny). They claimed that they were bringing god, civilization, and technology. 

Other Americans believed that they had no right to take the lands owned by Mexico and that it would violate the principles of their great nation.
