When the Bessemer converter became widely used, the price of steel in the United States dropped significantly. Henry Bessemer obtained the patent for his device in 1855, which used oxidation to remove impurities from iron. It allowed the United States to create strong railroad ties and allowed for skyscrapers to be built more safely, as the steel poured from it was more pure.
