45-45-90 right triangles are a special case where the ratio between the sides is 1:1:[tex] \sqrt{2} [/tex]. In other words, the hypotenuse is always [tex] \sqrt{2} [/tex] greater than the  legs.

If the legs are [tex] \sqrt{2} [/tex], then the hypotenuse must be 2.
