Find the definition of a stated theme, then it will help you in find the ways in which an author can express it, a stated theme is just a theme that is specifically stated by a certain event or by characters in the story. Author can use characters as a reactions to events in the story, or the characters dialogue and the characters personality to show a  important themes of a story, or themes to come into the story.
