A Smart Card refers to the integrated circuit chip on the card - that's the small square or round chip usually seen on the face of the card. This is used on both debit and credit cards to deliver encrypted authentication for the card when it is used in an shop at an electronic data capture machine (POS terminal), or at an ATM. The chip helps to prevent fraud and reduces the risk of a card’s data being duplicated.
