Basically, our Genetical material is encoded in our DNA bases, which has coded in some specific manner! Now, over hundreds of period of time, Mutation can occur & it alters it's characteristic by an extent. Due to this alteration, their coding can be disturb which would lead into variation & these variation are also inheritable. So, In that manner, mutations add variation to the genes of a species.
